An option is a contract. It gives you the right, not the obligation, to buy or sell a stock at a fixed price until a fixed date. You pay for that right up front.

Think of a concert ticket you can resell: it has a price, a face value and a date on it. After the date it is scrap paper, no matter how good the show was.
